TRENDS Research and Advisory Study confirms that Muslim Brotherhood's political and popular decline was reflected in its confused media discourse

15-August-2023

TRENDS Research and Advisory released a new research paper that confirms that the crises suffered by the Muslim Brotherhood group have led to a decline in political position of the group and caused loss of the Brotherhood appeal and popularity.  The study indicated that this decline was reflected in the official media outlets, especially the national media in Egypt or in other countries of the Arab region. The decline could not be rectified by the launch of the satellite channels of "Al-Sha'ub" and "Hirak", because they were stillborn.

The study entitled "Developments in the Muslim Brotherhood's Media Landscape after the Launch of Al-Sha'ub and Hirak TV Channels", showed that the Brotherhood's political appeal declined greatly. This affected their credibility, not only at the political level, but also in the media space. In fact, the Brotherhood does not have any experience or ability to manage the channels they created, and therefore they lack experience in dealing with the media scene.

The study is part of the series of "lecture papers" by TRENDS Research and Advisory. It was prepared by Mounir Adib, a researcher specializing in extremist movements and international terrorism. The author indicated that the Muslim Brotherhood's decision to launch the "peoples" satellite channel of Mahmoud Hussein's front, known in the media as the Istanbul Front, and the "Hirak" satellite channel of the General Office (Change Movement) or the so-called neo-Kemalists, coincided with the calls made by the Brotherhood to demonstrate in Cairo in November 2022, to provoke wide chaos in Egypt.  The move was aimed at exploiting the economic situation in Egypt and to export the idea of overthrowing the state in the belief that the group has the ability to incite the Egyptian people.

The paper dealt with four developments in the global scene of the Brotherhood, after the launch of the last two satellite channels. It considers that the developments are related to the change in the discourse of these satellite channels towards direct incitement to violence and chaos. Perhaps this is more intense than the case during the initial launch of these satellite channels. Moreover, these satellite channels moved out of their former headquarter in Istanbul to London, after the rapprochement between Cairo and Ankara.

The research paper also monitored the global scene of the Muslinm Brotherhood and highlighted the impact of the emergence of these satellite channels on the current landscape of the Brotherhood. The paper analyzed the effect of these developments on the calls by the Brotherhood group for staging chaotic disorders in the region, taking advantage of the economic conditions in the countries in which it is located. These are countries which were affected by the Corona pandemic and the Russian war on Ukraine.
