TRENDS Research and Advisory, in cooperation with the Writers and Readers Committee at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, organized a panel discussion at the Frankfurt International Book Fair 2023. The theme of discussion was on the role of media in promoting sustainability and combating climate change.
Participants in the seminar, which was held at the TRENDS Stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair, stressed the important role of media in spreading awareness about the issue of sustainability and combating climate change. The discussion focused on the need for concerted efforts by all parties to enhance this significant role.
Abdulhadi Al-Hammadi, a researcher at TRENDS, said that the media plays a key role in promoting environmental awareness among community members and encouraging the adoption of sustainability practices as a societal culture. It is also an effective means of supporting cooperation between stakeholders within countries and between countries and global institutions addressing the repercussions of climate change.
Lt. Col. Nasser Abdullah Al Saadi, Chairman of the Writers and Readers Committee at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, said that the media plays a vital role in promoting sustainability. Media outlets play diverse roles in this domain, such as enhancing community awareness about sustainability. highlight initiatives put forward by governments to support sustainability and promoting community initiatives. Media can help form a public opinion in support of sustainability, convincing individuals of the need to adhere to sustainability standards and detecting any harmful practices.
Al-Saadi stressed that the media has an important and effective role in supporting and promoting sustainability by playing these roles to contribute to spreading awareness of sustainability and encouraging individuals and communities to adhere to sustainability practices.
Lt. Colonel Al-Saadi spoke about the concept of sustainability, referring to the United Nations declaration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This a set of 17 interconnected goals designed to form a "roadmap to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all people.

Rahaf AlKhazraji delivered a paper entitled "The Role of Media in Combating Climate Change: COP28 as a Model." Al-Khazraji explained that the media can contribute to the drive of combating climate change by covering climate change issues continuously and objectively. Media should focus on human stories that illustrate the effects of this issue on individuals and societies. It can support the call for action by governments, businesses and individuals
Al-Khazraji stressed that COP28, which will be held in the UAE from November 30 to December 12, 2023, is an important opportunity for the media to enhance its role in combating climate change. This could be achieved by covering the events and discussions that will be held during the conference and report on this issue in a comprehensive and accurate manner.
She noted that the media can play a more effective role in combating climate change by investing in specialized coverage and collaborating with other stakeholders and by using new technologies to deliver the focused message.
Al-Khazraji concluded that the media can play a pivotal role in combating climate change, by working to raise public awareness on this issue, enhance scientific understanding and stimulate action to alleviate its impact.
