07-November-2023

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity of the UAE Government, released his book: "Cybersecurity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence", at the Signature Corner of the Sharjah International Book Fair. The book is part of TRENDS’ new publications.

The signing of these new publications, at the 42nd edition of the exhibition, reflect the objectives of TRENDS’ initiative to support promising Emirati authors. It falls in line with the scientific, cultural and knowledge program accompanying the TRENDS’ participation in the Sharjah Book Center.

Supporting creativity

His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, praised the efforts of TRENDS Research and Advisory and the contribution of the scientific research team which released this qualitative publication. He added that TRENDS has become one of the most noticeable research centers that support intellectuals, opinions and creativity. It empowers Emirati writers, especially young researchers.

His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti said that he discusses the state of cybersecurity in light of the advent and rapid progress of artificial intelligence. He explained that he considered the potential applications and the repercussions that may result from this technology, through three main axes: The first deals with what is meant by artificial intelligence, its definitions, types, stages of development and problems.

He explained that the second axis discusses the most important applications and uses of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity, whether at the level of defense or attack, in addition to the repercussions resulting from the use of these systems at the societal level. The third axis reviews the efforts made by the UAE and the level of preparedness for facing the next stage of cyber threats.

Technological acceleration

The Chairman of the Cybersecurity of the UAE Government stated that the unprecedented acceleration of artificial intelligence systems has made the process of managing change within human societies very difficult and complex. In fact, our laws, regulations and policies hardly stabilize until they face a new wave of technological development that requires new legislative amendments.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti indicated that it is certain that the progress in which humanity lives is only the beginning of the era of the predominance of artificial intelligence and smart machines over human lives.  We have to consider all the negative and positive effects of this advancement, which requires good preparations and prior planning to benefit from the gains of artificial intelligence and avoid its negative threats.

Cyber defenses

His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti stressed that cybersecurity and artificial intelligence have become two faces of the same coin, both affect and are affected by each other. The repercussions that artificial intelligence will have on cybersecurity are large and varied, whether at the level of cyber defenses, or at the level of developing cyberattacks and their increased risks. So, it is necessary to prepare for this stage, so that we protect our great achievements and defend our robust capabilities against those who attempt to abuse them.

Dr Mohammed Al Kuwaiti indicated that the book addresses a major problem. The infrastructure of the Internet, which manages smart interactions, is not without cyber vulnerabilities and threats, although the silicon system and the binary language and codes used in computers and software have proven to be very successful over the past fifty years.

He continued: “This system may not continue to be the same as it is in its current form, as the cornerstone on which technological developments will be based during the next fifty years. Therefore, has become necessary to reconsider the mechanism of work of this system in order to ensure a stable and safe life in the face of emerging cyber threats”.
