Trends
Research and Advisory has released a new study entitled "Climate Diplomacy
and International Cooperation." The study sheds light on the importance of
climate diplomacy in the context of climate change. The study coincides with
the UN Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28) and provides a
better understanding of climate diplomacy and explores its significant role in
confronting climate change crisis.
The
study was prepared by researcher Sharifa AlRaeesi, and Dr. Ayman
El-Desouky, Senior Researcher at Trends Research and Advisory. It showed
that the climate change crisis is a big risk to global security, as it includes
economic, societal, environmental, social, health, political, and even
geopolitical impacts. It is also one of the most complex crises faced by humanity
in the current century.
The
study stressed that international cooperation is the most effective approach to
ensure that countries adapt to the effects of climate change, and confront its multi-faceted
repercussions on human security.
The
study examined the role of climate diplomacy at the international and
subnational levels. It showed that the international level is currently driving
diplomatic interactions related to climate change, and the subnational
(regional) level is mostly affected by the impact of climate risks.
The
Paris climate agreement has marked a new era of climate diplomacy, with
countries pledging ambitious actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The
study concluded that maintaining a proactive environment for international
climate cooperation is a prerequisite for the successful implementation of the
Paris Agreement. Active diplomacy ultimately achieves a certain level of
climate stability.
