Coinciding with its participation in the
Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change (COP28), TRENDS Research and Advisory launched a new book entitled:
"Climate Change: Dimensions and future Directions." The event was
held at the Knowledge hub of the Green Zone at COP28. It was followed by a
discussion panel on the book that dealt with its 11 themes and in-depth analyses.
The discussion reviewed the dimensions, future directions and scenarios of climate
change confrontation and adaptation.
The book launch and panel discussion were
attended by academics, researchers, specialists and those interested in climate
action, environment and sustainability. The authors of the book chapters and a
group of COP28 visitors attended the event. The panel discussion was moderated
by Mohammed Al-Dhahouri, researcher and head of the Strategic Studies
Department at Trends Research and Advisory.
Dimensions of climate change
The book reviews the different aspects and
effects of climate change, on different continents of the world. It covered the
repercussions of climate change on armies, security and terrorism, as well as
its effects on water security. It includes possible solutions to address these challenges.
The book attempted to explain the role of
scientific and technological developments, such as artificial intelligence, in facilitating
adaptation, at a time when world leaders are meeting at the Conference of the
Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) to
develop effective climate action mechanisms, responses and adaptation policies.
The panel
discussion analyzed a range of studies included in the book. They covered "The
relationship between climate change and terrorism, health topics for the COP28 agenda, climate change and water
security, and encouraging students' interest in learning about energy and
climate, climate change and artificial intelligence."
A sustainable future
Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of Trends Research
and Advisory, said that the book "Climate Change: Dimensions and Future Directions"
provides a comprehensive scientific understanding of the current situation of
climate change and its expected directions. It calls for the urgent
international collective action to provide solutions for a sustainable future
that takes into account the environmental balance, using modern technology in
climate control, and promoting ways of economic development in a world full of
challenges.
Dr. Al-Ali indicated that the essence of this
book lies in its exploration of future trends and expectations, by studying the
possible directions of climate and future scenarios. The book recognized the
urgency of the climate crisis, and the need for research in all fields and at
all levels, to chart strategies to mitigate climate effects. This could be
achieved by highlighting successful policies and innovative tools, and stressing
the importance of international cooperation in addressing this global challenge.
Specialized Topics
Mohammed Al-Dhahouri, researcher and head of
the Strategic Studies Department at Trends, explained that the book covers many
topics specialized in social sciences, health and technology. It includes a
chapter on how terrorist organizations perceive climate change and plan to
exploit it to achieve their evil goals. Furthermore, there is a chapter that deals
with experiences in preparing curricula related to climate change. The book
covered climate-related international relations and the concept of green
diplomacy. Al-Dhahouri added that the book addressed the impact of climate
change on health. The book reviewed the role of artificial intelligence in
combating climate change.
Green diplomacy
The discussion addressed the role of green
parallel diplomacy in combating environmental problems. The topic of "Green
Parallel Diplomacy and Climate Change" was discussed. This part shows the
urgency of environmental problems associated with climate change, global
warming and pollution. Such challenges pushed regions and sub-state entities to
engage in addressing these problems, in light of the inability of some countries
to manage these emerging challenges alone. The book includes a chapter on "The
Tale of Two Continents: Attitudes
towards climate change in Europe and the United States", the approaches of
the European Union and the United States in dealing with climate change.
The discussion moved covered climate issues
at continent level. The study on "African Perspective on Adaptation to
Climate Change" highlights the impact of extreme climate events on the
African continent, and the challenges of confrontation. Although Africa has low
contribution to greenhouse gas emissions globally, it suffers greatly from the
huge impact of climate change for which it doesn’t have the adequate mitigation
resources.
