Trends Research and Advisory shall participate in the first annual forum of think tanks in Arab countries, held by the Department of Research and Strategic Studies at the League of Arab States in Cairo, Egypt. The forum is held on December 19 and 20 under the slogan: "With thought, we achieve sustainable development." Trends’ participation features a well-designed pavilion that includes more than 200 scientific publications translated into several languages, analyzing a wide range of regional and international issues.
In the first session, Trends reviewed the role of think tanks in supporting sustainable development efforts and enhancing their future prospects. The review included an account of the center's research and knowledge efforts in supporting sustainable development, analyzing the strategic and security challenges that threaten the Arab region and hinders development efforts. Research and studies recommend effective solutions that pave the way for an Arab sustainable development future.
Exchange of ideas
Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of Trends Research and Advisory, said in his intervention at the first session of the first annual forum of think tanks in Arab countries, that this pivotal forum is of particular significance. It brings together Arab think tanks to discuss cooperation and exchange ideas on issues of concern to this important region. Moreover, the forum shall facilitate the process of sharing visions and perceptions that enhance the chances of achieving sustainable development in Arab countries.
Dr. Al-Ali explained that Trends Research and Advisory has a similar experience of collective think tank effort, though at a global scale. Trends Research and Advisory holds an annual Trends Round Table for Think Tanks, with wide participation from Arab and international think tanks, ranging from 30 to 40 research institutions and think tanks. The Center organized a global forum for think tanks in Dubai in 2021 in which 35 directors of global think tanks gathered. Trends hosts other regular conferences and forums on certain issues of interest.
Sustainable Development
Dr. Al-Ali indicated that Trends is keen to enhance constructive cooperation with various think tanks, in a way that supports the achievement of common goals. Hence, the Center participated in this important forum for Arab think tanks. Dr. Al-Ali explained that achieving sustainable development has become the central issue for Arab countries, especially after the challenges of depletion of natural resources and climate change became overwhelming. For this reason, sustainable development issues and addressing their challenges were placed at the forefront of all international, regional and national forums. Sustainability in economic activities is the first priority for decision-makers in governments around the world, including Arab countries. So, sustainability has been equally important in almost all Arab countries.
Supporting Arab Cooperation
The CEO of Trends Research and Advisory indicated that development thought represents the solid foundation for sound policymaking. However, it is important to focus on the role of Arab think tanks in supporting intellectual work in the field of sustainable development. Such institutions conduct research studies to localize socio-economic development and deliver studies that foresee future challenges. Dr. Al-Ali added that the current reality of Arab economies confirms the continuous support provided by Arab governments for education and training to consolidate the cultural and practical experiences for developing human capital. The spread of many think tanks in all Arab countries, plays an indispensable role in supporting joint Arab cooperation and enhancing Arab decision-making for development.
Dr. Al-Ali said: "Sustainable development studies, research and consultancy studies are at the forefront of TRENDS' research programs. This reflects the Center's firm belief that knowledge produces sound solutions to our current and future problems. It reflects the Center’s belief that the role of think tanks is not only to foresee the future, but to participate in delivering its sustainability”.
Research Solutions
Dr. Mohammed Al-Ali stressed that the challenges and difficulties facing sustainable Arab development include economic, political, security and cultural challenges. Trends research efforts were diversified to include all of these challenges and provided various solutions to them. In fact, the Center issued many studies that addressed issues of industrialization, competitiveness and economic growth at the regional and international levels. Trends consultancy studies supported decision-making in the Arab region, especially the recommendations to create a business environment that attract investments for sustainable development.
Dr. Al-Ali stated that Trends has concluded dozens of agreements and research partnerships with think tanks in various Arab countries. The Center has participated regularly in most Arab intellectual forums and cultural exhibitions in the region. Furthermore, Trends Research and Advisory participated in the annual meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, in its versions "COP27" and "COP28".
Qualitative Knowledge
Rawda Al Marzouqi, Director of Distribution and Exhibitions Department at Trends Research and Advisory, said that the center enhanced its participation in the first annual forum of think tanks in the Arab countries, with a qualitative knowledge pavilion, filled with more than 200 publications. These publications include scientific encyclopedias and various studies and research, as well as the center's latest research productions in the field of sustainable development and the environment. They include recent studies that address the issue of climate change. She added that the pavilion aims to disseminate knowledge, and maximize the benefit of research outputs.
Rawda Al Marzouqi indicated that the Trends pavilion seeks introduces the scientific research output of the Center at this important forum, which witnesses the participation of dozens of Arab think tanks. She added that this participation opens new areas of cooperation and partnership between research institutions and think tanks. This produces genuine scientific research, and spread knowledge on a larger scale.
