Trends Research and Advisory released a new study. Disaster Risk Reduction Management is a Pivotal Mission in Achieving safety and Sustainability

24-December-2023

Trends Research and Advisory has released a new study entitled "Reflections on the Future... The challenges and repercussions of the increasing incidence of natural disasters in the world. and the burden of crisis and emergency Response management" The study examines the increasing incidence and severity of natural disasters, and analyze the burdens of crisis and emergency management systems in responding to these events. It also offers a set of recommendations to strengthen current efforts of disaster and crisis management.

The study, conducted by Dr. Hisham Al-Manaseer, a training expert at Trends Research and Advisory, indicated that strategies to reduce the incidence or risk of natural disasters are crucial elements to ensure the continuity and safety of communities at the national and international levels. This study also addresses the current and future challenges facing the world's disaster and crisis management units. It focuses on the changing roles of international organizations, national governments and local entities in providing the required response.

The study explained that the severity and frequency of natural disasters significantly affects disaster and crisis management units globally. These changes are primarily due to global climate change, which is expected to increase the incidence of various natural disasters including hurricanes, heat waves, harsh winter, and drought.

The study revealed that the increase in the severity and frequency of natural disasters constitutes an increasing challenge for crisis management units worldwide. For example, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) described 2021 as a record year in terms of natural disasters occurrence. The organization highlighted the growing recognition among politicians and scientists of the threats posed by these catastrophic events.

The WWF stated that disaster and crises management requires strong preparedness and response strategies to mitigate the negative impact of these events. The WWF indicated that early warning and disaster management systems have reduced the number of deaths caused by weather-related disasters over the past fifty years. However, economic damage continues to rise, posing a major challenge, especially for low- and middle-income countries, which suffer most due to a relative lack of preparedness.

Countries need to invest in sustainable strategies to strengthen their crisis management capacities, the study said. This includes developing comprehensive crisis management plans, increasing disaster preparedness, and improving infrastructure to cope with extreme weather events. In addition, modern technology, such as artificial intelligence, can significantly improve relief and disaster response efforts.

The study provides a set of recommendations to strengthen current efforts in disaster and crisis management. These include integrating risk management into development plans and processes, simplifying risk information and developing partnerships, stimulating adaptation and disaster risk management at the local scale. The solutions include developing individual and institutional capacities, enhancing the role of the private sector in development, securing appropriate financing, enhancing disaster risk management methods, and learning from past experiences.

The study concluded that crisis and disaster reduction management is a central task in achieving sustainability and safety at the level of countries and international communities. With the significant development in the role of international organizations, national governments and local entities in responding to natural disasters and emerging crises, much remains to be done to improve the capacities of affected States and build effective disaster management systems.
