TRENDS
Research and Advisory has just released issue number (6) of its lecture series
entitled: "Sports Diplomacy as a Tool of promoting States’ International Image”.
The paper was written in English by TRENDS’ contributor Dr. Michael M. Kobiericki,
Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, Poland.
This
issue deals with the topic of sports diplomacy, which refers to the use of
sports for achieving political, economic or cultural aims. The author discusses
the concept of sports diplomacy, its history and various forms. It also
highlights how countries are using sports as an effective soft power tool to promote
their international image.
The
study provides an insightful analysis of the different ways countries can use
to promote their international image and improve their global standing. These
methods include hosting major sporting events, high levels of domestic and
international performance, participation in international sports events,
foreign sports investment, sports development aid, and sports exchanges.
The
study discusses the challenges states may counter when trying to promote
themselves with the use of sport, or improve the way they want to be perceived
by the international public. Concerns include corruption, human rights abuses and
environmental impact.
The
study shows that countries have been using sports for diplomatic purposes for
centuries, where sport can help shape a nation's international image and
enhance its soft power.
The
study shows that although sport offers diverse opportunities for countries to
enhance their international standing, it certainly comes with significant challenges.
In conclusion, the paper
holds that sports diplomacy is a powerful tool that can be used to promote the positive
image of states and enhance their soft power assets. However, it is important
for countries to realize that using sport for this purpose does not guarantee
success in this endeavor and can be counterproductive, especially if it was not
delivered in a proper manner
