Trends
Research and Advisory stressed the significance of boosting international
cooperation to address the challenges of climate change in the Middle East. The
article stressed that the 28th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change
(COP28), hosted by the UAE, provided an opportunity to deliver a strong impetus
to climate action in the region and beyond.
Dr.
Mohamed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of Trends Research and Advisory, explained in an
analytical article published in the Journal of Strategic Horizons, published by
the Information and Decision Support Center affiliated to the Egyptian Cabinet,
that the Middle East faces major climate challenges. They include rising temperatures,
drought, water shortages, and the increase in extreme weather events, which
bring challenges that exacerbate conflicts and disputes, increase poverty and
hunger, and cause population displacement.
The
article addressed four elements: the main manifestations and repercussions of
climate change in the Middle East, the national policies of the region states towards
climate confrontation, climate priorities in the Middle East, and COP28: the
UAE's role in achieving international climate goals.
Middle
Eastern countries should focus on a range of climate priorities, including
strengthening the resilience of local communities to the effects of climate
change, accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy
sources, ensuring that developing countries have sufficient financial resources
to address climate change, and developing technologies that help adapt to
climate change.
Dr.
Mohammed Al-Ali highlighted the role of think tanks, scientific research and
environmental technology manufacturers, and stressed the importance of
developing technologies that help adapt to climate change and push the
transition to a green and sustainable lifestyle.
Dr.
Al-Ali concluded that achieving these priorities requires robust international
cooperation between the Middle East and the world. There is a need for developing
ambitious plans and programs of action to address climate change issues. He
said that the UAE plays a leading role in achieving international climate
goals, and has launched a set of initiatives, such as the "Renewable
Energy for All" and the "Adaptation to Climate Change"
initiative.
Dr.
Al-Ali explained that the UAE is committed to achieving its climate goals
through a set of initiatives, including investing in renewable energy sources.
In fact, the UAE aims to increase the share of clean
energy projects to 50% of its overall energy
mix by 2050. This shall be done through developing innovative
technologies and solutions to reduce emissions, by introducing carbon capture
and storage technologies, providing financial and technological support to
developing countries in the field of renewable energy and adaptation to climate
change.
