27-December-2023

Trends Research and Advisory has released a new study on the aspirations and challenges facing the BRICS group as it seeks to promote multilateralism in the international system.

The study has been conducted by Trends intern Aisha Al-Kaabi and entitled "BRICS: Potential and Challenges in the Multipolar International System." It showed that BRICS has an immense potential to bring about change in the international system. However, it faces a number of challenges, most notably diversity within the group, the rise of China, and global economic challenges.

The study stressed the importance of BRICS in building stronger institutional mechanisms, strengthening economic cooperation, and focusing on common goals, if it is to play a greater role in shaping a more equitable and inclusive world order.

BRICS includes a group of countries with large economies and growing political influence, making it an effective international power in the international system. However, the group also faces a number of challenges, most notably diversity within the group. The study indicated that BRICS member states differ in governance systems, economies and social models.

One of the challenges is the China's rise. China is the largest country within the BRICS group and has significant economic and political influence. China's interest in maintaining the status quo in the world order may limit the group's ability to bring about major changes.

Global economic challenges, such as high inflation and the food crisis, represent other challenges. These challenges could undermine the group's ability to focus on its political goals.

The BRICS success in overcoming the challenges will depend on its ability to build stronger institutional mechanisms, enhance economic cooperation, and focus on common goals, the study concluded. The BRICS group can play an important role in shaping a more equitable and inclusive world order by promoting multilateralism and cooperation among developing countries.
