The initiative sessions discussed "China's approach to
gradual progress at a steady pace: China's ambitions, expectations and role in
the Twenty-first Century." The initiative explores aspects of
international cooperation and competition with the People's Republic of China.
Trends' participation in the initiative came as a
representative of the Middle East and North Africa region. It was done through
a panel discussion on "How Other Countries Read China's Dream?" The
session addressed different regional and international perspectives on China.
The Center was
represented at the Peace Pathways Initiative by Ali Abdulla, Researcher and
Head of Projects at Trends Dubai Office, and Dr. Christian Alexander, Strategic
Studies Expert at Trends. Dr. Alexander delivered a presentation entitled
"The Dream of China and the Middle East".
Growing interests
Dr. Christian Alexander gave
a comprehensive analysis of China's multifaceted role and growing interests in
the Middle East. He highlighted China's economic, political and strategic
interests in the region, including energy security. China, as the world's
largest oil importer, places great emphasis on ensuring stable and secure
access to energy resources from the Middle East.
Dr. Alexander referred
to the importance of Chinese trade and investment in the region. They include various
initiatives, such as the "Belt and Road Initiative", where China aims
to deepen economic relations with the region by investing in infrastructure
projects, trade agreements, and economic partnerships. He spoke about China's
interest in technology, renewable energy, and industrial development that falls
in line with its ambition to become a global leader in high-tech industries.
Diplomatic relations
Dr. Alexander, strategic
studies expert at Trends Research and Advisory indicated that China seeks to
strengthen diplomatic relations with Middle Eastern countries, and position
itself as a mediator in regional conflicts. China is promoting its proactive
role as an alternative to Western powers. He added that the security and
stability of the Middle East is vital to protect China's economic interests and
investments in the region, and advance its efforts to combat terrorism and naval
piracy.
China aims to contribute to a multipolar world order by increasing its influence in a region traditionally dominated by the United States and its allies. Dr. Alexander explained that China's engagement in the Middle East is viewed through a complex perspective of geopolitical interests, economic benefits, and cultural exchanges. This mix forms multifaceted interactions between China and the countries of the region.
Many Middle Eastern
countries view China as a critical economic partner, a potential counterweight
to Western influence, and the general population often views China positively.
They believe that China has a vital role in economic development and cultural
exchange with the Middle East.
